JD, Elliot and Turk spend their first night at the hospital working without a supervising physician, finding the responsibilities overwhelming. A car crashes into the hospital parking lot after a televised car chase.

Dr Kelso challenges the residents to present the most interesting case study, with the best winning a trip to a medical conference in Reno. Meanwhile, Turk misses his opportunity to ask for a new laser on the one day each year when Dr Kelso grants favours, so he is forced to find another way to come up with the goods.

Turk's jealousy becomes guilt when he learns of Dr Kelso's sexual discrimination against Bonnie, JD betrays Carla's trust after she shares her innermost feelings with him, and Elliot volunteers to deliver bad news to patients.

JD's new white coat doesn't bring him any of the respect he anticipated. Meanwhile, Elliot had a one-night stand with a doctor.

JD's brother Dan hits it off with Elliot, and the two men re-examine their relationship. Dr. Cox teaches Turk an important lesson, and JD and Turk spend Halloween night at a bar.

A cancer patient sues Elliot for a misdiagnosis after she tells him he is close to death. J.D. becomes cocky after correctly diagnosing a patient's illness before Dr Cox does.

Dr Cox tries to help a pregnant and uncomfortable Jordan. J.D. dates the woman from the gift shop in the hospital. Elliot is forced out of her apartment after a fight with her father.

Elliot and JD start sleeping together again when she moves in with him temporarily, but they realise that this isn't the best thing for their friendship, and Dr Kelso accuses Carla of cultivating relationships with her patients at the expense of their well-being.

Although disappointed Elliot ended their relationship, JD learns to be her friend, and Dr Cox ignores the symptoms of a hypochondriac patient who turns out to be really sick.

JD's theory about the hospital's balance between life and death is tested, Turk has trouble popping the question to Carla but buys an engagement ring, and Elliot, tired of having to change in a mixed dressing room, demands a room of her own.

Waiting on an answer from Carla, Turk spends time with his brother, who confesses he's getting a divorce. JD works with an old colleague of Dr Kelso, while Jordan and Dr Cox have a disagreement over finding out their baby's sex.

Elliot realises a nice guy she met at the bar is actually a nurse at Sacred Heart. Initially believing he was a doctor, she's no longer sure she wants to become involved with him.

JD and Turk cause an accident after hitting a car with a golf ball while playing golf on the roof of the hospital and believe they've contracted bad karma. Elliot puts on an act for her new boyfriend and Jordan goes into labour.
