As the fifth season opens, Elena, after a passionate summer with Damon, heads to college nearby with Caroline as her roommate. Plus, a terrifying appearance by Silas.

A fellow Whitmore student named Jesse gives Elena some intriguing information about Professor Wes Maxfield. Damon asks for help finding Stefan.

Rebekah arrives in New Orleans and receives some unexpected news from Hayley. When she becomes concerned that Klaus is up to no good, Rebekah seeks help from a reluctant Sophie. Meanwhile, Klaus tries to uncover Marcel's secret weapon; and Marcel enlists Davina's help to carry out his own dangerous plan.

Klaus and Rebekah try to unravel Marcel's empire from within in spite of Elijah's concerns. Meanwhile, Marcel hosts a huge vampire party; and Hayley learns that the supernatural creatures of New Orleans are reacting to the existence of a hybrid baby.

Davina convinces Marcel to let her attend an annual music festival in the city; Hayley visits a mysterious doctor in the bayou and makes a shocking discovery; Klaus takes a special interest in Cami who reveals alarming information about her past; Rebekah tries to get to the bottom of a recent strange encounter involving Elijah.

Klaus becomes angry over recent events involving the safety of his unborn baby and demands answers from Sophie. Meanwhile, gruesome remains are discovered in the bayou; and Davina reveals some shocking information about the witches.

When Elena and Katherine have the same dream that Stefan is in danger and desperately needs their help, they convince Damon to help them find Stefan. However, their plans are thwarted by a mysterious young woman named Tessa who seems to know everything about Stefan's history.

Damon and Elena try to help Stefan through a confusing time, which ends up taking Elena on an emotional journey. Caroline makes an effort to know Jesse better.

On campus, Elena is touched by a sad and secretive student named Aaron. Elena and Damon attend the Whitmore Historical Ball dressed as Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. At the ball, Elena shares a dance with Dr. Maxfield, who has a disturbing message for her. Caroline's evening at the ball takes her from happiness to heartbreak.

Damon and Elena are skeptical of Silas's new goal; Tessa realizes she was outsmarted by Silas; after discovering a new consequence of becoming human, Katherine decides she needs a new place to stay; Bonnie is impressed with Jeremy.

Klaus goes to extreme measures to protect Hayley and their unborn baby when he learns Hayley's life is being threatened. Meanwhile, Cami turns to Father Kieran for guidance; Marcel seeks advice from an old friend; and Davina tries to control her magic.

The power of doppelgangers.... While Elena and Damon try to explain Amara's situation to Stefan, Dr. Wes Maxfield gives Katherine some deeply disturbing news. Nadia shows up at Caroline's dorm room searching for Katherine. After a surprising conversation with Amara, Jeremy and Bonnie share a glimmer of hope. Silas fails to keep a promise, causing Damon to turn to Tessa for help with his new plan, and Stefan makes a heartbreaking confession to Damon and Elena.

At Whitmore College, Elena and Caroline decide it's time to throw a big party, but their plans are interrupted when Jesse suddenly needs Caroline's help. At Elena's request, Damon comes up with an effective method to get Wes to answer his questions. At the party, Elena finds that she and Aaron have a lot in common, and Caroline grows more concerned about Jesse.

Hayley goes missing after someone from her past makes a startling revelation. Meanwhile, Klaus has a dangerous encounter with an unexpected visitor; Davina makes a surprising connection; and Marcel makes Rebekah an enticing offer that leaves her torn.

Rebekah faces a difficult decision and turns to Father Kieran for guidance; Elijah struggles with the consequences of a recent fallout with Klaus; Hayley is drawn away by a mysterious figure who sheds light on her past; Cami discovers a cryptic message; Marcel uncovers some disturbing information about Klaus.

A violent confrontation occurs when the human faction takes matters into its own hands. Meanwhile, Klaus opens up to Marcel about his past indiscretions; Hayley learns about a plan to harm the werewolves in the bayou; and Cami gains insight into Klaus's past.

Locals prepare to celebrate the annual Casket Girls Festival in the French Quarter. Meanwhile, Davina tries to free Cami from Klaus's mind compulsion; and Hayley is forced to make a difficult decision after she receives an unexpected phone call.

Davina becomes violently ill and the repercussions affect the entire French Quarter. Meanwhile, Sophie delivers some startling information about the harvest festival and presents a drastic plan to save Davina; and Hayley, racked with guilt, confesses to Elijah about her role in Sophie's plan.

Damon is trapped by Dr. Wes, and realizes scary things about his past.

Damon realizes Elena is in danger and enlists Stefan's help to find her. The brothers pay a visit to Aaron, and Damon shocks Stefan by revealing his first-hand knowledge of Aaron's family. In an attempt to stop Damon, Dr. Wes unleashes his secret weapon, forcing Damon to deal with a part of his past he thought was gone forever, as well as the consequences of his decades-long plan for revenge.

Back to Katherine's early life 1490, Nadia helps her mom with a fighting plan.

Marcel refuses to help Klaus when a gruesome discovery is made in the Cauldron; Rebekah uncovers the remnants of a sacrifice down by the docks and realizes it is the work of a dangerous warlock from her past; Klaus battles a powerful force with an unmatched advantage over him.

Damon tries to get back together with Elena, however, Katherine has a plan and attempts to take Elena's body permanently. Tyler is upset with Caroline and Matt is used by Katherine to serve a purpose on the show idk why tbh. Enzo finds Damon and they decide to become a team again.

Hoping to help everyone move past recent traumatic events, Caroline convinces Elena and Bonnie to attend Whitmore College's "Bitter Ball" for broken-hearted students. Bonnie is intrigued with a fellow student named Liv, who appears to be dabbling in witchcraft. Tyler starts to worry about Matt's relationship with Nadia. Why would she be into such a boring guy? She must have an ulterior motive, even Tyler knows this!

As Damon's behavior escalates from destructive to deadly, Stefan begins to regret their last conversation and decides to track Damon down and intervene. For reasons of her own, "Elena" volunteers to come along. Dr. Wes enlists the Travelers to set a trap that will once again test Damon's friendship with Enzo.

While Nadia remembers her centuries-long search for her mother, Stefan, Caroline and somehow Matt come up with a desperate new plan to save Elena's life. For the second time, Bonnie and Jeremy must turn to Liv for help. Damon baits Tyler into a nasty confrontation, then takes off to seek revenge on Dr. Wes. Caroline and Tyler come to a new understanding. Finally, Bonnie learns of a terrifying secret that will threaten the lives of all her friends.

Damon tries to figure out how to make a disturbing confession to Elena.

Father Kieran encounters a witch from his past; Marcel and Rebekah fear that secrets they have kept hidden for nearly a century will be exposed; Hayley throws a party for her werewolf clan; Sophie is shocked by a discovery at the cemetery; Klaus takes drastic measures in the Cauldron that produce dangerous repercussions for everyone involved.

Rebekah gets locked up in a sanatorium where she worked in 1919. A witch seeks revenge against her and plans to reveal dark secrets that could destroy Rebekah if exposed. Meanwhile, Elijah makes a decision that puts Klaus and Rebekah in further danger.

Flashbacks to 1919 focus on Klaus revealing details of the devastating secret that Rebekah and Marcel tried keeping from him. Meanwhile, Elijah forms an unlikely alliance with Monique; and Hayley holds Sabine hostage in an attempt to get information that will reverse the curse on Phoebe's werewolf clan.

Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah become trapped in the City of the Dead cemetery by a witch's boundary spell. Klaus and Rebekah trade angry accusations until Elijah reveals a dark secret from the family's past. Meanwhile, Marcel races to free Rebekah but he has to make a deal with Genevieve.

Bonnie has an unsettling encounter with Luke, and learns more about his family history. The Travelers' leader, Markos, arrives in Mystic Falls.

Elena and Stefan start having dreams about an alternate version of their lives; The Travelers move in on Mystic Falls; Matt has a frightening encounter on the Other Side. But he sadly doesn't stay there.

Enzo holds Elena, Stefan and Bonnie hostage to uncover the truth about the love of his life. Markos performs a ritual to undo witch's magic.

Damon and Caroline suspect Stefan and Elena of keeping a secret while they hide from the travelers, unaware of the dead man out for revenge. Meanwhile Jeremy and Bonnie help Tyler get rid of Julian. Matt participated too I guess.

Elijah makes a bold move to regain control over the Quarter and receives an intriguing offer of support from a beautiful woman who belongs to a powerful New Orleans family. Meanwhile, the Mikaelsons throw a lavish party in an attempt to bring the warring factions of the city together, but a vicious fight threatens the evening.

Genevieve asks Elijah to allow her coven to publicly celebrate a traditional feast day, where members of the community offer the witches gifts in return for blessings. Meanwhile, Elijah makes plans to restore his home to its former glory; and Klaus sends Cary, a werewolf from his own line, to find a missing piece of family history.

Cami's good intentions lead Kieran to a violent episode. Meanwhile, Elijah and Klaus disagree over how to handle the Crescent Wolves. Elijah travels to the bayou and witnesses a horrific explosion that only adds to the hatred among the communities. Later, Hayley learns a surprising piece of her family history from Marcel.

Hayley confronts a surprising enemy and falls into peril during a wake to honor a late member of the community. Meanwhile, Klaus suffers from nightmares about his father and is forced to examine his own troubled relationship with his adoptive son; and Marcel learns about Francesca's quest to find a mysterious key that will unlock a family secret.

When Stefan and Elena escape from Markos' control, only to find themselves Stranded in a remote location, Stefan gets philosophical with Elena about her relationship with Damon. After their attempt to protect the doppelgangers goes badly, Liv and Luke come up with a dangerous new strategy. Damon recruits Matt as a human shield and Jeremy to help him set a trap for Markos, who turns out to have a devastating surprise of his own.

Damon's plan causes a huge explosion in Mystic Falls, and everyone is caught up in the confusion, leaving a trail of heroism, sacrifice, relief and despair.

Klaus and Elijah enact a plan that promises to alter the fates of Hayley and the werewolf community, and lead to the extermination of the French Quarter vampires. Meanwhile, Marcel rallies an army to battle the Mikaelsons and regain control of the city; and Francesca threatens Cami, who deciphers a code that leads to a surprising revelation among the city's factions.

Season 1 ends with Hayley trying to protect her unborn baby from the witches. Meanwhile, Francesca meets with Oliver and Jackson to determine the future of the werewolves in New Orleans; and Davina and Cami join forces to take down Klaus, who is forced to make a heartbreaking decision.
